It’s a big new game from Team Ninja. It’s an open-world adventure set in Japan in the 19th century, and it looks pretty nice. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

Rise of the Ronin release date
Rise of the Ronin is still a long way off. Its first trailer may look polished and show a lot of gameplay, but Team Ninja says the game won’t be out until sometime in 2024.
That means there’s still time to make it shine, and we might not hear much more about it for a while as the developers keep working.
Rise of the Ronin platforms
Rise of the Ronin has been announced as a console exclusive for the PlayStation 5. This means that you won’t be able to play it on Xbox consoles, unless the agreement only lasts for a certain amount of time.
This also leaves some room for a PC version, but we don’t think we’ll know for sure for a while, since Team Ninja hasn’t said when the game will come out.

Rise of the Ronin has only had one trailer so far, but it’s more detailed than you’d expect for a game that won’t come out for another two years. It seems to be a mix of in-engine footage and cutscenes, but it gives us a pretty good idea of the world we’ll be exploring and the time we’ll be dropped into.

The Game’s Story
The game takes place at the end of Japan’s Edo era, in the early 1900s. This time was called the Bakumatsu, and it was marked by disease outbreaks, civil wars, and the arrival of foreign interests, like the American embassy that you can see in the trailer.
We’ll play as the Ronin from the game’s name. You won’t have to be loyal to anyone, so you can make your own decisions as you move through the world.
Team Ninja says that the story will be deep and dark, showing “the most important revolution in the history of Japan, including the darkest and ugliest chapters that many will shy away from.” Based on what we know about what happened during this time, it sounds like it could get pretty scary.
We’ve heard that we’ll get to make a lot of choices that will have real effects on how the story goes, so we’re excited to learn more about the RPG elements at play.

Rise of the Ronin gameplay
The game is Team Ninja game, so it’s no surprise that there will be a lot of fighting in it. From what we saw in the reveal trailer, the fighting looks powerful and deadly.
