In 2020, Apple unveiled its M1 system-on-chip (SoC). It was initially included in a custom-built Mac Mini sold only to select developers for testing and optimization purposes. During the November 2020 Mac event, Apple announced the first commercial M1 Macs: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini. Last spring, they were followed by the all-new colorful M1 iMac.
In late 2021, we got redesigned MacBook Pro models with upgraded M1 Pro and Max chips, followed by the Mac Studio in spring 2022, and finally, M2 MacBook Air and Pro models in late 2022. However, rumors of a redesigned Mini have been circulating for some time. Here’s everything we know about Apple’s upcoming small computer.

Mac Mini: Release Date
Initially, rumors suggested that Apple would release the upcoming Mac Mini in the fall of 2022. But, as you might expect, that did not happen.
Based on Apple’s track record, we can anticipate an announcement in the spring or fall of 2023. As previously stated, Apple refreshed the iMac in the spring, followed by the MacBook Air and Pro models in the fall. It stands to reason that the company would stick to those seasons for a new release. Finally, there have been no solid leaks, so we will have to wait and see.

Mac Mini: Pricing
The Mini is currently available in three different configurations from Apple. The base M1 model costs $699, an upgraded M1 model costs $899, and an Intel model costs $1,099. There are no solid rumors about the upcoming Mac Mini’s pricing, but it’s safe to assume Apple will keep it in the same price range.
Because the Mac Mini is the most affordable model in the Mac lineup, raising its price significantly may be a deal breaker for customers on a tight budget. It is possible that it will release redesigned M2 Pro and/or M2 Max variants for a higher price, but it may also upgrade it to the regular M2 chip for a more affordable price.
Mac Mini: Expectations
Design
Because Apple’s chip takes up less space than Intel’s, the upcoming compact beast is expected to have an even smaller body than its predecessors. According to the renderings, it will no longer have a circular base, and the aluminum top will be replaced with new material. We don’t know about the finishes, but Apple sells the redesigned MacBook Pro in Silver and Space Gray, so we could see Apple use these two colors for the upcoming Mini.
Regarding ports, we have some good news for dongle-haters (everyone?). We anticipate that the Mini will be treated similarly to how Apple reintroduced port types removed from previous MacBook Pro models. According to rumors, it will have a magnetic power cable, similar to the new colorful iMac. There are also four USB-C, two USB-A, Ethernet, and HDMI ports. Unlike the new MacBook Pro, this model is unlikely to include an SD card reader. Renders also show a missing headphone jack, which will disappoint many users even in 2022.

Technical specifications
Apple may include M2, M2 Pro, and possibly M2 Max processors. At this time, it’s unclear what configurations will be available, but it’s difficult to imagine the tech giant releasing the new Mini with only an M2 configuration. An M2 Pro is also a good bet.

Mac Mini: Everything we want to see
There’s a lot to hope for when it comes to the upcoming Mini, some of which might come true:
- A less expensive M2 with a redesigned chassis. Apple planned to release a new Mac Mini with three processor options: M2, M2 Pro, and M2 Max. In this case, the existing M1 Mini with the older design would be phased out.
- Instead of plain Silver and Space Gray, the M1 iMac has colorful finishes.
- A headphone jack is provided for audiophiles, producers, and editors who rely heavily on wired headsets.
- The ability to purchase the colorful Magic Keyboards and mice that come standard with the new iMacs directly from Apple. It does not include a keyboard or mouse. If they release it in colorful finishes, it only makes sense for users to be able to purchase matching accessories.
- This is extremely unlikely, but it would be convenient if Apple converted the top of the Mac Mini into a MagSafe or regular Qi wireless charger. Users can easily charge their iPhones or AirPods while staying connected to their computers in this manner. However, this would specifically heat the Mac, which may be fanless in the first place. Regardless, it’s a cool and futuristic concept.
