AMD has revealed the release date and price of their new Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor, as well as a half-dozen other new processors. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is a high-end CPU that AMD claims are currently the “greatest gaming processor in the world.” In this post, we’ll compare the Intel Core i7-12700K vs AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D processors to see which one is better for your next gaming PC setup.

Specifications

Before we begin the comparison, here’s a quick look at the specifications table to see what each CPU brings to the table:

Performance Disparity

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D and Intel Core i7-12700K are also new processors. They’re both fully equipped and have excellent choices for a high-end gaming system. And, as you can see, the specifications of both processors are strikingly similar. With eight performance cores (P-cores) and four efficiency cores, the Intel Core i7-12700K has a hybrid core architecture (E-cores). On the other side, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D features eight cores and 16 threads. Both CPUs will deliver great performance in both gaming and content creation workloads, there’s no doubt about that. These are two high-end CPUs with a strong set of specifications going head-to-head.

The base frequency of the Core i7-s performance cores is 3.60GHz, whereas the base frequency of the Ryzen 7 regular octa-core configuration is 3.8GHz. The P-cores of the Core i7 12700K can reach a maximum turbo frequency of 4.7GHz when overclocked, while the Ryzen 7 5800X3D can surge to 4.5GHz. The new Ryzen CPUs have slightly lower core frequencies, most likely because to heat concerns. This was also discussed in our Ryzen 7 5800X3D vs Intel Core i7-12700 comparison, so make sure to read it as well.

The increased 3D V-cache memory is one of the new Ryzen chip’s primary benefits. As you can see, the Intel Core i7-12700K has only 25MB of L3 cache, whereas the new Ryzen CPU offers up to 96MB. This will let the Ryzen 7 5800X3D perform substantially better in gaming and other tasks that require multiple threads. According to AMD’s internal testing, the new Ryzen 7 5800X3D is on par with the Intel Core i9-12900K in terms of performance. We haven’t had a chance to put the new Ryzen processor to the test yet, but AMD has provided some performance comparison figures:

No overclocking support for 5800X3D

It’s been confirmed! Overclocking is not possible with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. This is a disappointment, especially since the 5800X3D is a high-performance chip. AMD claims that it is still working on fine-tuning the packaging for its V-cache CPUs. Because the Ryzen 7 5800X3D was the first of its kind, it was voltage locked at 1.35V. Overclocking of the fabric and memory is still possible, so hobbyists will be able to change some parameters. We’re hoping that future V-cache CPUs won’t suffer the same fate and that AMD will figure out a method to tweak these new devices. When the new Ryzen 7000 series processors hit the market, we’ll have more to say about it.

On the other side, the Intel Core i7-12700K allows for overclocking. Both chips, however, do not come with a CPU cooler, so you’ll have to purchase one separately. If you’re looking for some cooler options on the market, you might want to check out our compilation of the best CPU coolers.

Availability & Pricing

AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D is now official, and it will be available for $449 starting April 20. Because AMD is advertising the 5800X3D as its top gaming CPU right now, that’s a wonderful deal. It’s the same price at which AMD introduced the Ryzen 7 5800X. The Intel Core i7-12700K, on the other hand, is currently available for $384. Alternatively, for about $370, you can get the Intel Core i7-12700KF without integrated graphics. Read also; AMD Ryzen 7 5800X Vs Ryzen 7 5800X3D

Which processor should you buy: Intel Core i7-12700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D?

The Intel Core i7-12700K doesn’t have as much L3 cache as the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, but it’s still capable of gaming and supports overclocking. Overall, we think it has a good combination of features, including DDR5 and PCIe 5.0. You will, however, need to purchase a new motherboard for it. The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D will be compatible with the current set of AM4 motherboards, which are widely accessible and reasonably priced. If you don’t mind waiting a few more months to create your new PC, we recommend waiting for AMD’s Ryzen 7000 series desktop CPUs to be released. We anticipate the business announcing some strong chips that will fight with Intel’s Alder Lake chips for the top spot in our best CPUs list. If you choose to buy a laptop instead, AMD’s Ryzen 6000 series mobile processors are also worth considering.
