When Red Dead Redemption 2 came out, it felt like only yesterday that Rockstar Games let us go into a huge frontier world full of bandits and shoot-outs. A long time ago, Grand Theft Auto 5 came out, but it can’t have been that long ago.
There’s a good chance it can, in fact. GTA 5 may have been re-released to make it last longer, but it came out in 2013. A lot has changed since then, and now that the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S have been released, we know for sure that another game in Rockstar’s most popular series could be on its way.
For your pleasure, we’ve put together everything we know about Grand Theft Auto 6 in one place. Let’s start.
GTA 6 Release Date
To start, let’s give you some background. While GTA 5 came out in 2013, Rockstar didn’t start working on the next one right away. As far as we know, it started working on GTA 6 in 2014. It also had to work on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions of GTA 5, as well as the PC and Google Stadia versions of Red Dead 2.
In the past, Rockstar has kept quiet about GTA 6. Now, the company has broken its silence to say that it is indeed working on GTA 6 and that while it doesn’t have much to say right now, there will be more news in the future.
Do you know what we all thought, then? There will be a sixth Grand Theft Auto game, and it’s already in the middle of making. Just don’t get your hopes up too high that it’ll show up soon. It might not.
GTA 6 Platforms
A big part of the first big leak about GTA 6 was about which platforms it was likely to be released on. GTA 5 came out at the end of a console generation. It was first released on the PS3 and Xbox 360, then on the next generation of consoles.
A lot of people say that the pattern won’t be repeated in GTA 6. The leak says that the game will only work on the Playstation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and S.
Given that those consoles will have been out for at least a couple of years when the game comes out, that’s very likely.
If GTA 6 doesn’t come to PC within a year of its release, it would be a little weird. Because Red Dead Redemption 2 came to PC a lot faster than GTA 5 did years ago, it would be a little weird if it didn’t.
GTA 6 Gameplay
It’s common for people to wonder about one thing while they wait for more information about a new Grand Theft Auto game: where will it be set? People and stories are both interesting, but it feels like the setting of Grand Theft Auto is the most important decision Rockstar has to make. Whether it’s Liberty City, Los Santos, or another big city, where the game will take place is a big question mark.
At the moment, people are speculating that GTA 6 will be set in Vice City, which is GTA 3’s version of Miami that is full of neon lights and neon signs. The reason for this? When you play GTA Online, there is a racing DLC called Open Wheels. The race track looks a lot like the outline of a map that would include Miami, as well as a small part of Mexico. The image below shows that the outline is pretty clear. Rockstar, on the other hand, is keeping its own business at this point.

An alleged leak, which came from the friend of a disgruntled ex-Rockstar employee, added a little more information to this idea, making it even more interesting. If the information is true, the game will be set in Florida and have a bigger map than both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. It will cover three cities, including Vice City. Players will reportedly be able to control four different characters, which will add to GTA 5’s three main characters.

It looks like another map leak shows more of the whole map, as well as a section that looks like the Kennedy Space Center because of its layout. However, as always, there isn’t much proof that this is true information.
Some more information comes from a Reddit user who has put together a rough idea of what the map might look like. It’s big and has a lot of empty space, so we’re not sure if it’s real or if Rockstar is going in a new direction with the game. Rumours say that for the first time in the series, a woman will be able to play a character in the game. This is something that we think is long overdue. In this case, the information comes from longtime leaker Tom Henderson. In the past, he’s been right about things.
Also, there have been suggestions that Liberty City (from GTA III), San Andreas (from GTA: San Andreas), and the Midwest could be in different parts of the game. Or maybe all of the above could be in different parts. Rumours from March 2022 also say that the game will be broken up into different time periods, not just for short episodes like GTA 5’s prologue. This is more than just for short episodes like the prologue.
It doesn’t matter, though. The game will push the limits of what Sony and Microsoft’s new hardware can do, no matter what. If the game is bigger and more detailed than the map from GTA 5, that doesn’t mean it will be. But that’s the way things seem to be going right now. GTA 6 Story
As a rule, each GTA game so far has had the main storyline that was about crime, but the exact flavour of that crime has always changed. Dan Houser, the co-founder of Rockstar, left the company in March 2020. This is important information for the story of GTA 6.

In other words, one of the studio’s most important tastemakers and writers has left. He has helped to shape the franchise’s tone since the very beginning, along with his brother Sam.
There’s a good chance that Dan Houser had a lot to say about the script and story before he left because the game is likely to be out soon. Another thing to think about is whether or not he was on his way out. It’s possible that he wasn’t nearly as involved. In November 2021, there were reports that the story had been restarted after Houser left. That means we could be in for a new voice for GTA 6.
A lot of people don’t know how that would happen, but it’s a new thing for Rockstar, and that’s something. It started with an old patent that Rockstar filed in 2017. Another rumour started because of this.
A story about gentrification and the spread of capitalism sounds like it would be easy for Rockstar to make a lot of jokes about, don’t you think? Though, having a city that changes based on what the players do in the story is a pretty good idea.
A new tidbit about the game’s story is about where it takes place in time. There are rumours that it could come back to Vice City. There have been a lot of questions about whether the game will be set in the 1980s again. According to Tom Henderson, though, it’s going to be a modern-day game like GTA V.
Henderson has been proven right a lot of times in the past, so this is a new and interesting thing. In the future, we’ll keep adding to this round-up, so be sure to check back.
