We’re approaching the year when speculation regarding the upcoming Call of Duty game ramps up. Vanguard was released in late 2021, and we now know that Modern Warfare 2 will follow.
We’ve compiled all of the vital information about the game for you, so keep reading to learn everything you need to know about the next COD.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 release date and title
COD 2022 was widely thought to be a follow-up to Modern Warfare, released in 2019. It was also rumoured for about six months that the title of that game would have a “2” at the end, bringing back memories of the original Modern Warfare 2.
In February 2022, Infinity Ward gave the media a briefing on its plans for both Modern Warfare 2 and a new version of Warzone that will come with it. This was a first for the series. You can read about the essential things in a community update that it put out after.
We don’t know when the game will come out, so we can just go with the typical Call of Duty timeline. Modern Warfare 2 will come out in early November 2022. Infinity Ward is mostly making it, but there are reportedly 10 other studios working on the game in support roles. This kind of resource sharing isn’t new for the series.
We’re due a reveal trailer fairly soon, after Infinity War unveiled the game’s logo in late April 2022:
That was followed by a teeny-tiny teaser trailer that doesn’t reveal much but emphasizes the title and logo.
It’s all very intriguing, and we can’t wait to see what Infinity Ward has up its sleeve – after all, the studio has been boasting a lot about how groundbreaking the game will be.
We’ve seen hints that the game after this one will be a return to the Black Ops series, implying that a familiar cycle of games is in the works. However, according to a shocking rumour from Bloomberg, it will not be released until 2023, giving Modern Warfare 2 a complete two-year cycle of support.
This is important news for both the franchise and the game, as no game has gone two years without a new competitor in almost a decade. It’ll be interesting to see what Infinity Ward comes up with to keep the game fresh for that long.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 platforms
It usually comes out on every platform that can run it so that more people can buy it. In January 2021, Xbox announced that it was buying Activision, the company that makes Call of Duty.
A lot of people were shocked when they heard the news because it raised the possibility that Call of Duty could only be played on Xbox hardware in the future. That might happen in the future, but it won’t have an effect on Modern Warfare 2.
Contracts with PlayStation mean that at least the next main COD game in 2023 should be available on both PS4 and PS5. Before the deal is done, the game will be out. Another thing Microsoft has said is that it plans to keep the series on PlayStation even after the deals with Sony end.
So, you can be sure that when Modern Warfare 2 comes out, it will at least be available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, even if the consoles are old.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 story and setting
Allegedly called “Project Cortez,” the game is said to have a single-player campaign set during the American-led War on Drugs in South America.

According to additional reports by Tom Henderson, the game will be even grittier than Modern Warfare 2019, which has already leaned more toward realism than Call of Duty has for a while, with scenarios like Clean House incorporating realistic room clearances and night vision.
Infinity Ward has been working on the game since it released Modern Warfare three years ago, giving it a lot of time to make changes. The campaign will have real narrative choices and guns that sometimes jam to make you feel like you’re in the middle of a river without a paddle.
They’ll be taking on the cartels in undercover missions that won’t be as militarised, but instead will focus on stealth and wits.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 gameplay
I’m sure there will be a lot of continuity between the next game from Infinity Ward and its last one, but that still leaves room for improvements and new features.
We still expect it to have a low time to kill, making it a pretty hardcore shooter. We’ll be interested to see if it adopts some of the new technology Vanguard has made while it’s still in development.
Among other things, the WW2 shooter has a lot more destructibility in the maps and environments. It also has a more flexible weapon mounting system that lets you move around more while still getting bonuses for controlling your weapon. Read more; Call of Duty Warzone Pacific: Season 2 Reloaded.
Because of how much cleaner and less cluttered Modern Warfare’s maps are compared to other Call of Duty games, we’re not sure how the environment will look in the next game.
Somewhere else in Tom Henderson’s lengthy report, the campaign will have more advanced enemy AI that will react more to your shots and clutch wounds as they duck for cover. That sounds a little grim when it’s written down, but it will probably make the fight feel more accurate when you’re moving.
He has also said that the game will have a lot of remade multiplayer maps from the original Modern Warfare 2 game. This means we could be going back to places like Dust and Terminal.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Warzone integration
Black Ops Cold War was a mess when added to Warzone, with a recycled map and unbalanced weapons. Activision now seems to know that it has to do better when adding new COD games to its free-to-play sensation.
Vanguard came with a new map called Caldera, which took the fight to the Pacific and finally added a new location to the game. Modern Warfare 2 is going to try to make that happen every year.
Read Infinity Ward’s community briefing. You’ll learn that they’re building a new Warzone experience from the ground up with Modern Warfare 2, on a new engine that all COD games will use in the future to avoid having similar issues between their ecosystems.
As well as a new map and an unknown sandbox mode, Warzone is getting a new look. Infinity Ward says it’s sure this new version of Warzone will shake things up again in the Battle Royale genre with this new version of Warzone. Read also; Grand Theft Auto 6: Everything You Need to Know.
Activision has said in recent job ads that it sees the next step for the COD franchise as moving it into its “2.0” state, which means more connections between games, it looks like.
That’s likely to be a good sign for fans of the games, which will only get more investment moving forward.
