You can do more than just check the weather
Are you the proud owner of an Amazon Echo, or are you thinking about purchasing one but are confused what to do with it? Alexa-enabled speakers and smart displays from Amazon can do more than just check the weather and set an alarm. Check out the best Amazon Echo and Echo Show tips & techniques below to improve your life.
1. Make your Amazon Echo whisper
There’s no need to yell at Alexa because it can pick up on almost anything. Similarly, you can easily change a few settings to have your Echo or Echo Show react silently. You can talk softly to the smart speaker/display, and it will react in kind. This ensures that when you ask Alexa to adjust the music or turn on the smart lights, you will not receive undue attention. You must enable the proper mode before your Echo device can respond.
- Open the Alexa app on your phone.
- Go to the More tab.
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll down to Alexa Preferences.
- Select Voice Responses.

6. Enable the Whisper mode toggle.

If you’ve just received your first Alexa-enabled smart speaker, here are some Amazon Echo tips to help you get the most out of it.
2. Use your Amazon Echo to track your food delivery
You must enable the proper Alexa skill from your region’s meal delivery service provider for this.
- Launch the Alexa app on your smartphone.
- In the bottom navigation bar, tap the More tab.
- Select Skills & Games.
- Scroll down to the Top Categories section.
- Choose the Food and Drink option.
- Find a skill from your meal delivery service provider that allows you to track the status of your order.
- Select the appropriate Alexa skill.
- Choose Launch.
- Connect your food delivery service and Amazon account.
Once the connecting is complete, you can ask your Echo to locate the food you ordered.
You can use Alexa on your Echo to track Amazon purchases. This is a rather simple procedure. Simply ask Alexa, “Alexa, track my order,” or “Alexa, where is my stuff?” The voice assistant goes over your recent Amazon purchases and delivers an update on its whereabouts.

3. Use your voice and Amazon Echo to create your shopping list
Remove the random sticky notes and let your Echo construct a shopping list for you. The list is accessible via your phone’s Amazon or Alexa app, so you won’t need to be near your Echo to decide what to buy.
You can add goods to your shopping list with your Echo or Echo Show simply saying, “Alexa, add [item name] to my shopping list,” and delete items quickly by saying, “Alexa, remove [item name] from my shopping list.”
The nicest thing about Amazon shopping lists is that you can keep many lists on hand at all times. So, if you’re planning a wedding, you can make a separate Wedding shopping list.
To access the shopping list from your phone, follow the steps below:
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More from the bottom of the screen.
- Select Lists.
- Select the list you want to access. You can see all the items added to the shopping list.

5. Add or remove items from the list if you want.

4. Use Amazon Echo to locate your phone.
Alexa can assist you the next time you can’t find your phone behind the couch cushions. Simply tell your Echo to “locate my phone.” Alexa will dial your phone number in order for it to ring.
For the feature to work, you must have the Alexa app installed and configured on your device. It won’t function if your phone is set to silent or vibrating, but it’s still preferable to asking a friend or family member to call you so you can look for your phone.
5. Use your Amazon Echo smart speaker to control your TV.
Allow your Amazon Echo or Echo Show to operate your TV instead of the remote. You may ask Alexa to play your favorite Prime Video show on your living room TV, turn it on and off, and do other things.
- Open the Alexa app on your phone.
- Tap the More tab in the bottom navigation drawer.
- Scroll down and select TV & Video.
- Choose your TV or streaming device from the list of service providers that are supported.
- Connect Alexa to your service provider. Depending on the supported service, the joining method may differ.
- If you have multiple Alexa devices, link the TV to one of them.
Once connected, you can use your Echo speaker or smart display to ask Alexa to “turn on/off the TV,” “play The Boys on Prime Video,” “change the TV input to HDMI 2,” and other commands.
6. Turn your Amazon Echo Show into a security camera.
Your Echo Show can also function as a security camera. You may view the camera’s live stream on your phone or any other Echo Show connected to your Amazon account.
- Open the Alexa app on your phone.
- Tap Devices in the bottom navigation bar.
- Slide on the list of device types and select Cameras.
- Tap the Echo Show from which you want to view the live feed.

5. Tap the Mic button to enable the microphone.
6. To communicate with anyone in the room, activate the Speaker.

7. Combine your Amazon Echos for multiroom music playback
You can combine numerous Echo speakers or smart displays in your home for multiroom music listening. This allows you to broadcast music to several speakers, allowing you to continue listening to music as you move around your house.
- Tap Devices in the bottom navigation bar.
- Tap the + icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select the Combine speakers option.
- Tap Multi-room music.
- Select the speakers you’d like to add to the multiroom setup.

7. Give a name to the group of speakers.
8. To finish, press the Done button.
Once everything is in place, say “Alexa, play music on [group name]” to start playing multiroom music. You may also use this method to create additional groups with various sets of speakers.
NOTE: When you have multiple Echo speakers, a multiroom music group called “Everywhere” is created by default. This allows you to play music on all of them at the same time without having to set up multiroom audio.
8. Change the speed at which Alexa speaks on your Amazon Echo.
Do you struggle to keep up with Alexa on your Echo because the assistant speaks too quickly? Or perhaps you want Alexa to tell you something faster because you find it too slow? You can change Alexa’s voice playback by saying, “Alexa, talk slower,” which will slow down the voice assistant’s speech rate. You can also tell Alexa to “talk quicker.”

Alexa has seven different speed options. Every time you issue the command to increase or reduce the speech rate, it goes up or down by one notch. As a result, you can repeat the instruction to increase or decrease Alexa’s voice tempo.

9. Create a Voice ID
Unlike smartphones, Amazon Echo-style smart screens and speakers are intended for use by the entire family. Create a unique Voice ID for each user who uses Amazon Echo. This allows Alexa to recognize them more accurately and deliver them customised information that is relevant to them. Everyone can then add items to their Amazon wishlist and make purchases using their Amazon account.
Follow the steps below to set up Voice ID:
- Open the Alexa app on your phone.
- Tap the More tab in the bottom navigation drawer.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Your Profile & Family.
- Tap the name of your profile. To create the Voice ID, you must be logged in to your account.
- Select Set up Voice ID from the settings page that opens.
- To build your own voice profile for Alexa, follow the on-screen instructions.
The profile is instantly synced to the additional Echo devices linked to your Amazon account once set up.
Tip: It is possible to create a Voice ID for a Kids profile in Alexa.
10. Change the Alexa wake word
To activate Amazon’s voice assistant on your Echo device, you don’t necessarily have to say “Alexa.” Other wake-word possibilities are available on Amazon. Changing the wake word on your Amazon Echo device is straightforward, but you must go deep into the Settings menu.
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap Devices from the navigation bar at the bottom.
- Tap Echo & Alexa.
- Select your Echo device.
- Tap the Settings icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select Wake Word from the Device settings page.
- Choose your favorite wake word. Amazon occasionally provides celebrity wake words for Echo devices. They can be found near the bottom of the page in the Celebrity Wake Word section.
